The Netherlands has received €103 million in State aid from the European Commission (EC) to help towards greening its maritime fleet.
The State aid scheme grant will assist the country in purchasing clean and zero-emission vessels that use e-methanol and green hydrogen, and retrofitting existing assets to use these fuels. The aid will be granted between 2027-2031, bridging the investment gap in line with the FuelEU Maritime and EU Emission Trading System.
The aid was assessed under EU State aid rules and, according to the EC’s press release, “the Commission concluded that the scheme is necessary and appropriate as the supported investments would not take place without public support at the same scale and within the same timeframe. The measure is also proportionate as it has limited effects on competition and trade in the internal market.”
