Metafuels and PSI Open aerobrew Demonstration Plant
Metafuels and Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) have opened the new methanol-to-jet (MtJ) sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) demonstration plant, aerobrew, in Villigen, Switzerland.

The site provides the operational foundation for Turbe, the first commercial plant for MtJ in the Port of Rotterdam, the Netherlands, which aims to begin production from 2030.

In a joint press release, Saurabh Kapoor, CEO of Metafuels, and Christian Rüegg, Director of PSI, stated: “The demonstration plant represents a crucial milestone in the development roadmap of aerobrew technology, unlocking the path towards commercial-scale SAF production. Since the project began in 2024, our interdisciplinary team has been working to implement a facility that bridges cutting-edge research and development with the practical requirements of industrial deployment. The aerobrew demonstration plant stands for the successful collaboration between research and entrepreneurship – and thus paves the way for commercialisation.”
