The European Commission (EC) has approved two Dutch schemes under EU State aid rules to support synthetic aviation fuel (e-SAF) projects and contribute to the Clean Industrial Deal and ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation objectives.
The two schemes, looking at technology pathways in bio-SAF and e-SAF, will share a combined budget of €290 million, with one providing investment aid for SAF projects and the other covering the costs of prep work for SAF projects, including front-end engineering design studies. The schemes will support projects that are estimated to produce around 285 kilotonnes of SAF annually.
In its press release, the EC stated: “Under the schemes, the aid will take the form of direct grants payable upon the completion of project milestones. The schemes will cover the period from 2027 until 2031 at the latest. Up to five rounds of funding will take place during this period, depending on the available funding. Beneficiaries of the scheme dedicated to support SAF production will have to prove compliance with the EU criteria for the production of renewable fuels of non-biological origin or the EU sustainability criteria for advanced biofuels.”
