Germany’s BMFTR Launches e-Fuels and CCU Project Funding

Germany’s Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) is launching a new funding measure aimed at companies, universities and research institutions for e-fuels and carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) production projects. The project outline deadline is 30 November 2026.

The BMFTR’s new funding guidelines, titled Innovative Production of E-Fuels and CCU-based Precursors – New Paths for Climate-Neutral Fuels of the Future support pre-competitive research, development and innovation projects along the e-fuel value chain. The guidelines highlight the need for climate-friendly e-fuels in aviation, shipping, and special vehicles in the military sector, and highlights the funding’s aim of “strengthen[ing] Germany as a research, development and technology location for e-fuels, and to actively prepare and help shape international markets.”

In its press release, the BMFTR stated: “We are looking for projects with a clear gain in innovation and a clear perspective for application and transfer. The participation of companies is expressly desired. The funding extends up to a maximum technology maturity level of 3 and is intended in particular to create the scientific and technological basis for later demonstration and application projects. In addition, research topics and results are to be prepared as part of science communication and made accessible to a broad public in a low-threshold manner.”
