The first conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels is taking place from 24th to 29th April in Santa Maria, Colombia. The conference will welcome participants from over 53 countries, from organisations committed to transitioning away from fossil fuels. The experience and perspectives of national and subnational governments, academia, Indigenous Peoples, People of African Descent, civil society, workers, the private sector and other key actors, will be included.

The conference positions itself as a sustained political platform for countries ready to deliver implementation-driven action toward an orderly phase-out of fossil fuels. It is a complementary space to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) - but crucially is not intended to be a replacement for any UN meetings on climate change and is not a platform to produce or negotiate a new fossil fuel treaty.

Discussions will be centred around transforming supply and demand, advancing international cooperation and climate diplomacy, and overcoming economic dependence. The conference will produce a report identifying enabling pathways for implementing a just, orderly, and equitable transition away from fossil fuels, ideally serving as an input for the roadmap prepared by the COP30 presidency.
