Consorcio Austral has put in its environmental impact statement for the Acuario Project, which will be situated in the Magallanes Province of Chile.
The Acuario Project, costing $4.7 billion (€4.1 billion) and with a target construction date of 2029, aims to produce one million tonnes of green ammonia every year for exporting to industry, mobility and chemical end users, or as a carrier for green hydrogen. The project will install 1.73GW of wind turbines, a 220kV underground power line, battery energy storage, water desalination, electrolysis capacity of 240,000 tonnes of green hydrogen, air separation for nitrogen and Haber-Bosch synthesis.
A second project, Sagitario, is planned for 2031.
On its website, Consorcio Austral says it “aims to develop two projects in the Magallanes Region. Here we aspire to carry out large-scale projects based on renewable energy generation to produce green hydrogen and, subsequently, green ammonia. This energy has uses in the agriculture and mining industries, in addition to replacing other fossil fuels in the transport sector (land, sea and air) and in the generation of electricity.”
