Uniper has awarded FEED contracts totalling over SEK 100 million (EUR 9 million) to AFRY, Carbon Clean, Siemens Energy, and Topsoe for its NorthStarH2 e-methanol project in Östersund, Sweden. The year-long basic engineering phase will establish the technical layout for the facility, which aims to produce 115,000 tonnes of e-methanol annually from renewable electricity and biogenic carbon dioxide.
Siemens Energy will handle electrolysis, Carbon Clean provides carbon capture technology, Topsoe supplies methanol synthesis systems, and AFRY leads overall engineering integration. Designed to supply low-carbon fuel to shipping, heavy transport, and chemical industries, the project faces its next major milestone with an environmental permit application planned for autumn 2026. Uniper expects a Final Investment Decision in 2028, leading to target commissioning in 2031.
