H4 Marseille Fos Awarded Synthetic SAF EU Innovation Grant

HY2GEN’s H4 Marseille Fos project has been awarded a grant under the EU Innovation Fund, one of the largest support programmes for innovative low-carbon technologies. H4 Marseille Fos, located in Fos-sur-Mer, France, is designed to produce 75,000 tonnes of synthetic aviation fuel, also known as e-SAF, a year, beginning in 2032.

Achieving this grant highlights the technical and financial maturity of H4 Marseille Fos, and strengthens Europe’s commitment to reducing its reliance on fossil fuels. The project now moves into the preparation phase with the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), who is implementing the Innovation Fund on behalf of the European Commission (EC).

Cyril Dufau-Sansot, CEO of HY2GEN, commented: “I am very proud of our team behind H4 Marseille Fos for their hard work. The grant brings us a decisive step closer to final investment decision, which we are targeting for 2028, keeping us on track for the start of production in 2032. It is encouraging to see the EU following through on its ambition to establish new industries with significant potential for Europe’s energy future. As a producer, this support provides an important signal that Europe is committed to building the renewable fuels market needed to achieve its climate and energy governance objectives. Our ambition is to support the build-up of the e-SAF market and strengthen Europe’s energy sovereignty by reducing its dependence on imported fossil fuels. I thank the EC, CINEA, Grand Port Marseille Fos and all our partners for their confidence and commitment to making the energy transition happen.”

Wopke Hoekstra, Commissioner for Climate, Carbon Neutrality and Clean Growth at the EC, stated: “These projects show that European innovators are making climate ambition an industrial priority. By reinvesting revenues from the EU Emissions Trading System into pioneering clean technologies, the Innovation Fund helps companies access the market, reduce their emissions and strengthen Europe’s competitiveness. This is how the EU achieves its climate goals while supporting jobs, investment and a resilient, net-zero economy.”
