EU to subsidise energy-intensive industries

EU to subsidise energy-intensive industries
EU members are now able to reduce a beneficiary’s extra electricity costs by up to 70%. The reduction applies to energy-intensive industries such as agriculture, fishery, land transport, and intra-EU sea shipping.

The Middle East crisis Temporary State aid Framework (METSAF) is to support member states with the cost of fuel and fertilisers that have risen sharply.

The price increase will be determined by comparing pre-crisis consumption to an operators’ current costs.

Member states can also calculate the costs including factors like the size and type of operators’ activities and an estimate of fuel consumption, instead of providing actual consumption proof. Under this simplified option, each operator can receive up to €50,000.

Aid of up to 50% of total consumption is already available under the ETS State Aid Guidelines.

The METSAF will be in place until 31 December 2026.
