Italian engineering group Saipem has been awarded a pre-Front-End Engineering Design (pre-FEED) contract by renewable fuel producer Synhelion AG. Under the agreement, Saipem will develop the technical framework for a commercial-scale synthetic fuel facility located at RWE’s Chemiepark Knapsack industrial site in Hürth, Germany.
The planned plant is designed to produce approximately 30,000 tonnes of RED-compliant renewable synthetic fuels per year, targeting the aviation, maritime, and road transport sectors with a primary focus on Sustainable Aviation Fuel, alongside synthetic diesel and gasoline.
Saipem will deliver a multidisciplinary engineering package integrating Synhelion’s proprietary solar technology, fuel synthesis, and upgrading processes with RWE’s site infrastructure. The resulting technical baseline will support the plant's upcoming permitting process, subsequent FEED phase, and final investment decision.
