The German Development Corporation (GIZ) and Ecopetrol have entered into a strategic alliance to install an electronic-sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) production plant at the Cartagena Refinery, operated by Reficar, in Colombia.
Over the next 24 months, technical feasibility and engineering studies will be carried out for Ecopetrol’s Coral project, which has a projected production capacity of 800 tons (726 tonnes) of green hydrogen per year. GIZ will provide specialised technical assistance in Power-to-Liquid and hydrogen technologies.
Ecopetrol states: “It is a combination of assets, technical capabilities and international cooperation, which will accelerate technological validation and reduce risks in future scaling. The project integrates Ecopetrol’s historical experience in the production of fuels and biofuels, now applied to the development of non-fossil synthetic liquid fuels, which reinforces its role as a key player in the construction of new energy value chains.”
