Western Finland Designated as EU’s BotH₂nia Hydrogen Valley

Western Finland’s coast has been officially designated as the BotH₂nia Hydrogen Valley by the European Union under the Clean Hydrogen Partnership programme. The valley covers the regions of Southwest Finland, Satakunta, Pirkanmaa, Ostrobothnia, Central Ostrobothnia, North Ostrobothnia, and Sea Lapland, recognising the area’s potential for large-scale renewable hydrogen production.

Currently, the region generates more than two-thirds of Finland’s wind power, contributing to some of Europe’s lowest electricity prices. By 2030, BotH₂nia is expected to produce nearly 300,000 tonnes of clean hydrogen annually, primarily through electrolysis powered by renewable energy. The project is forecast to attract over €3 billion in investments, making it a key hub for Europe’s hydrogen and e-fuel production.

The valley hosts a dynamic ecosystem of companies, including ABB, Danfoss, Hitachi Energy, and Wärtsilä, alongside smaller tech firms and start-ups. Seventeen distinct hydrogen value chains have already been identified, with around €350 million invested annually in research and development. The EU hydrogen valley initiative supports integration of production, storage, and distribution of clean hydrogen while fostering regional value chains in line with the RePowerEU strategy.
