TURN2X and Axpo Iberia Sign First PPA for Green e-Methane in Spain

news item image
TURN2X has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Axpo Iberia to supply renewable electricity from Aquila Clean Energy for the production of green e-methane, marking Spain’s first contract of its kind. The project represents a milestone in the European energy transition and the development of renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO).

The TURN2X module is the first in Spain to produce RFNBO methane, combining green hydrogen from electrolysis with captured biogenic CO₂. The resulting renewable natural gas can be transported through existing infrastructure and used by hard-to-electrify industries such as ceramics, steel and maritime transport, supporting both decarbonisation and energy independence.

The agreement adapts the EU RFNBO certification framework to the Spanish market, providing traceability and guarantees of origin. It sets a replicable model for other projects, reinforcing Spain’s Hydrogen Roadmap, which targets 4 GW of electrolyser capacity by 2030 and up to 25,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen consumption annually.
