TOYO Selected for NEDO Project to Advance SAF with Velocys’ FT and Methanol Technologies

Toyo Engineering Corporation (TOYO) has been selected by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) for its programme on “Development of Production Technologies for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), etc.”.

The 18-month feasibility study will assess SAF production from diverse feedstocks, including municipal solid waste, through two routes: gasification Fischer–Tropsch (FT) synthesis using Velocys’ advanced technology, and methanol synthesis with subsequent conversion to SAF, leveraging TOYO’s proprietary process.

Key project aims include comparing the technical and economic potential of both pathways, quantifying SAF output, evaluating opportunities for co-products such as synthetic gasoline and diesel, and identifying requirements for scaling eSAF using renewable hydrogen and captured CO₂.

The study builds on TOYO’s prior work under NEDO, including pilot-scale FT-based SAF production and research into integrated supply chains. By combining its engineering expertise with international partnerships, TOYO aims to accelerate the development of scalable, low-carbon aviation fuel solutions.
