Team Europe has unveiled a €12 billion investment package to accelerate South Africa’s Just Energy Transition, sustainable infrastructure, digital connectivity, and pharmaceutical value chains. The announcement was made on 9 October by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Building on the €4.7 billion package announced at the EU–South Africa Summit in March, this new initiative marks a major step forward in the EU’s Global Gateway strategy and its partnership with South Africa. The programme aims to boost competitiveness, create jobs, and support an inclusive transition to a green economy.

The investment will support projects across several strategic areas, including clean energy, green logistics, digital connectivity, and vaccine manufacturing.

Among the new commitments is the Coega Green Ammonia Project, which will produce green ammonia for agricultural, chemical, and mining applications, as well as for use as a clean maritime fuel – reinforcing South Africa’s ambition to become a global green shipping hub.

Team Europe will also back initiatives to strengthen local biomanufacturing capacity, enabling South Africa to produce vaccines and pharmaceuticals for the wider African continent.
