US-based SunHydrogen has successfully operated its commercial-size 1.92m² hydrogen module outdoors, producing hydrogen directly from sunlight and water without relying on grid electricity.
The unit integrates light harvesting and electrolysis in a single system, removing the need for separate photovoltaic panels and electrolysers.
This marks the first real-world test of the company’s technology at scale. SunHydrogen now plans to build and operate a pilot system of 16 modules – totalling more than 30m² of active area – within a closed housing for continuous hydrogen and oxygen production at UT Austin’s Hydrogen ProtoHub.
