StormFisher Hydrogen, a Canadian leader in low-carbon energy solutions, has acquired Recyclage Carbone Varennes (RCV) following a court-approved process, paving the way for North America’s first large-scale low-carbon methanol plant.
Building on RCV’s existing infrastructure and expertise, the Varennes facility will use clean hydrogen and captured local CO₂ to produce more than 72,000 tonnes of low-carbon methanol annually. By repurposing CO₂ emissions from local industrial sources, the project is expected to avoid over 100,000 tonnes of CO₂ release each year, supporting decarbonisation in Québec and globally.
Scheduled to begin operations in 2028, the plant will supply low-carbon methanol to the maritime, aviation, and chemical sectors. The approach simplifies production compared with RCV’s initial biomass-based design, offering a cleaner, more reliable, and resilient solution.
StormFisher brings over 20 years of experience in low-carbon energy, turning complex projects into large-scale, bankable solutions. The project will also create approximately 75 local jobs across construction, operations, administration, and logistics.
The company is committed to close collaboration with local partners, governments, communities, and maritime stakeholders to ensure the project delivers lasting benefits while accelerating maritime decarbonisation in Québec and beyond.
