Repsol Takes Minority Stake in Estonian Electrolyser Maker Stargate Hydrogen

Spanish oil and gas major Repsol has acquired a minority stake in Stargate Hydrogen, an Estonian company producing alkaline electrolysers. The investment, made through Repsol’s Corporate Venture Arm, is part of Stargate’s €11 million Series A funding round.

Stargate recently opened its factory with an annual manufacturing capacity of 140 MW, producing containerised 1 MW electrolyser units based on its Stellar stack technology, designed for long lifespans. The company aims to install between 700 MW and 1.2 GW of electrolyser capacity by 2030.

Repsol, one of Spain’s largest grey hydrogen producers and consumers, sees the partnership as a way to collaborate on R&D, product development, and commercial deployment of Stargate’s technology. However, the company recently scaled back its green hydrogen production target to between 700 MW and 1.2 GW, citing slow market growth and high costs, and shelved a 130 MW project after deeming it economically unfeasible.

The move reflects Repsol’s strategic goal to replace grey hydrogen in its refining operations with green hydrogen.
