UK green hydrogen producer Protium delivered in 2025, its first consignment of green hydrogen to climate‑tech company OXCCU at the company’s OX1 pilot facility in Oxford. This collaboration marked a tangible step forward in the development of cost‑effective and lower‑carbon intensity SAF from waste carbon and hydrogen, demonstrating the real‑world integration of clean hydrogen supply with next‑generation fuel technologies.
'We received a delivery of green hydrogen from Protium at our OX1 pilot facility, marking the important step in the production of SAF from waste carbon and green hydrogen,' OXCCU announced publicly, last year.
OXCCU’s OX1 plant, commissioned in 2024 at London Oxford Airport, is the world’s first demonstration facility to convert CO₂ and hydrogen directly into jet‑fuel‑range hydrocarbons in a single catalytic step. This innovative process simplifies the traditional multi‑stage fuel production pathway, reducing complexity, energy losses, and overall carbon footprint compared with conventional methods.
Andrew Symes, Co-founder & CEO at OXCCU, says: The green hydrogen will be used in our one‑step catalytic process to convert CO₂ and hydrogen directly into liquid fuels. Working with Protium as a full value‑chain green hydrogen provider, we continue to focus on reducing the lifecycle emissions of our fuel and reinforcing our commitment to producing SAF with lower carbon intensity. Thank you to the Protium team for supporting this next stage of testing. Another great step towards cost‑effective, scalable SAF.'
This delivery not only fuels the ongoing technical validation of the OX1 pilot but also highlights the strategic role of reliable green hydrogen supply in enabling SAF production pathways that can scale commercially.
Protium is one of the UK’s leading commercial green hydrogen companies. Its Pioneer 1 green hydrogen production facility has been producing green hydrogen for a range of industrial applications since early 2023. Building on this, Pioneer 2, its second largest facility, will scale production by 25x the volume, with 2.5 MW of PEM electrolyser capacity. Protium provides end‑to‑end green hydrogen solutions, including production, supply, distribution, logistics and support services for partners pursuing net‑zero solutions.
Jon Constable, COO, Protium, adds: 'By supplying green hydrogen to projects like OXCCU’s OX1 pilot, we are helping to decarbonise heavy‑industry sectors and catalyse the uptake of clean fuels, bridging the gap between hydrogen production and innovative downstream uses such as SAF synthesis.'
The collaboration between Protium and OXCCU reflects a broader shift in the energy and aviation sectors toward sustainable fuel pathways, where renewable electricity and waste carbon streams are converted into high-value liquid fuels with significantly reduced lifecycle emissions.
As both companies continue to scale, with OXCCU’s next‑generation plants and Protium’s expanding hydrogen infrastructure, this partnership exemplifies how clean energy producers and advanced fuel innovators can join forces to accelerate climate‑impacting solutions.
