Prometheus Fuels has carried out a world-first demonstration by running artificial intelligence solely on liquid e-fuels made from air and renewable electricity. The fuel, produced at its commercial pilot facility using CO₂ captured directly from the atmosphere and solar power, was used to power AI fully off-grid and carbon-neutral.
The breakthrough comes at a time when global electricity demand from data centres is projected to more than double by 2030, with consumption rising at 15% annually. Many facilities are facing years-long waits for new grid connections, while fossil gas is increasingly being used to fill the gap, locking in emissions and costly infrastructure.
Prometheus’ approach avoids these bottlenecks by producing transportable, storable e-fuels that can run in existing turbines and generators to deliver reliable 24/7 baseload power. Projects can be deployed at gigawatt scale in under two years without requiring a grid connection, offering a fast, low-cost, carbon-neutral energy solution for both new and existing data centres.
