P2X Solutions will supply green hydrogen for Finland’s first synthetic kerosene production pilot, which will produce zero-emission aviation fuel, or eSAF. The pilot, led by technology company Liquid Sun, involves leading industry companies: Finnair, Finavia, Fortum, and ABB. The project is unique in Finland and serves as a pioneer for all of Europe, showing how open collaboration and the involvement of the entire value chain can enable a sustainable change in aviation.
Green hydrogen and biogenic carbon dioxide provide an opportunity to decarbonise sectors, such as air transport, where direct electrification is not possible. E-SAF produced from hydrogen can be deployed in current aircraft using existing infrastructure without significant modifications. Hydrogen enables a rapid and large-scale transition to cleaner aviation.
Herkko Plit, founder and CEO of P2X Solutions, says: 'The production of eSAF presents a huge opportunity for Finland. Europe-wide, approximately 46 million tonnes of jet fuel are consumed annually, and Finland is in an excellent position to produce eSAF. We have access to abundant emission-free electricity, clean water, biogenic carbon dioxide, and a growing body of expertise in the production of next-generation fuels.'
Pasi Keinänen, founder and CEO of Liquid Sun, says: 'The production process of eSAF demands that the entire production chain and its raw materials meet stringent sustainability criteria. For the production of certified green hydrogen, P2X is a pioneer and therefore a natural partner for the eSAF pilot. Moreover, we share a common set of values and the ambition to establish a world-leading eSAF production chain in Finland.'
