P2X Solutions and Sunfire are expanding their collaboration with a new 40 MW hydrogen project in Joensuu, Finland. The project builds on the success of the partners’ earlier achievement in Harjavalta, where Finland’s first industrial-scale green hydrogen plant was commissioned earlier this year, a milestone in the country’s energy transition.
Sunfire has been selected to conduct the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) study for the Joensuu plant, which will use the company’s pressurised alkaline electrolysis technology. The study will define the technical and operational requirements for the plant and represents a key step towards a final investment decision.
The Joensuu facility will produce green hydrogen that will serve as a feedstock for e-methanol, a synthetic fuel that can significantly reduce carbon emissions in sectors such as shipping and aviation. The new plant will triple P2X Solutions’ total green hydrogen production capacity, reinforcing Finland’s role in developing sustainable e-fuels for hard-to-abate industries.
The partnership between P2X Solutions and Sunfire highlights their shared focus on scaling up practical, commercial hydrogen and e-fuels projects. Their previous collaboration in Harjavalta showcased the successful deployment of Sunfire’s proven technology, which delivers high efficiency and reliability. With the new Joensuu project, the companies are taking another step toward expanding Europe’s green hydrogen and e-fuels infrastructure.
