OMV Building One of Europe’s Largest Green Hydrogen Plants in Austria

news item image
OMV has broken ground on a 140 MW electrolysis plant in Bruck an der Leitha, Austria, set to become one of the five largest green hydrogen facilities in Europe. Scheduled for completion by the end of 2027, the plant will produce up to 23,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually using renewable electricity from wind, solar, and hydropower.

The project is expected to cut carbon emissions at OMV’s Schwechat refinery by around 150,000 tonnes a year—equivalent to 10% of its current direct production-related footprint. The €hundreds-of-millions investment also includes a 22 km hydrogen pipeline linking the plant to the refinery.

Funding is being finalised with the European Hydrogen Bank and Austria Wirtschaftsservice GmbH, with a contract expected by late 2025. Siemens Energy will supply the electrolysis technology and lead engineering and construction under an EPC contract, while STRABAG will handle civil works and site infrastructure.

OMV already operates a 10 MW electrolyser in Austria, but the new plant will be the largest in the country, the largest in South-Eastern Europe, and among the biggest in Europe.
