NTPC and Carbon Clean Produce First Methanol from Captured CO₂ at Vindhyachal

news item image
NTPC Energy Technology Research Alliance (NETRA) has produced the first drop of methanol using captured CO₂ at its Vindhyachal power station, marking a major step in India’s carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) efforts. The project uses Carbon Clean’s licensed technology, supplied through its Indian subsidiary, Carboncapture Technologies Pvt. Ltd., and demonstrates that CO₂ can be reliably captured at industrial scale and converted into valuable products.

The facility captures 20 tonnes of CO₂ per day directly from flue gas, which is then hydrogenated with green hydrogen to produce methanol. The achievement highlights NTPC’s growing focus on decarbonisation and the potential to create a domestic value chain for low-carbon fuels and chemical feedstocks.

This milestone also coincides with Carbon Clean’s participation in the UK Prime Minister’s trade mission to India, underlining the strengthening collaboration between the two countries in advancing clean energy innovation and industrial decarbonisation.

The Vindhyachal project reinforces both NTPC and Carbon Clean as key players in India’s emerging CCUS market and showcases the role of advanced capture technologies in transforming emissions into economic opportunities.
