The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has announced nearly $8 million in funding to support pilot and demonstration projects that convert waste feedstocks into low-carbon fuels. The initiative targets hard-to-electrify sectors such as aviation, maritime, and heavy industry, where options beyond electrification are limited.
Eligible projects can use waste sources including municipal solid waste organics, landfill gas, wastewater sludge, and agricultural residues. Fuels that qualify for support include sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), renewable natural gas, renewable diesel, clean methanol, and e-fuels. Notably, hydrogen, ammonia, and biogas are excluded from the programme.
Funding is designed to support the full project lifecycle, from feedstock agreements and engineering design to site construction and performance testing. Projects must involve a consortium of partners – including a technology provider, engineering contractor, feedstock supplier, host site, and end user – and demonstrate at least 50% cost-share from outside NYSERDA sources.
Proposals are due by 22 January 2026, with an informational webinar scheduled for 6 October 2025 to outline requirements and application details.
