Liquid Wind Granted €3.6 Million in Funding for e-Fuel Project in Sweden

Liquid Wind has been awarded €3.6 million (SEK 39 million) in funding from Industriklivet, the Swedish Energy Agency’s programme supporting the green transition of Swedish industry. The funding will support pre-engineering work for the company’s full-scale e-methanol plant in Örnsköldsvik, northern Sweden.

The Swedish Energy Agency has assessed that the project provides a strong foundation for Liquid Wind to advance towards a final investment decision for the planned e-fuel facility. Once operational, the project is expected to help decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors such as shipping, aviation, and chemicals by replacing fossil fuels with renewable e-methanol.

The Agency noted that the project’s goals are fully aligned with Industriklivet’s mission to reduce industrial carbon emissions and strengthen Sweden’s sustainable manufacturing base.

The planned e-fuel facility will be integrated with Övik Energi’s biofuel-powered combined heat and power (CHP) plant, creating a highly efficient and circular energy system. Using renewable electricity, the facility will produce green hydrogen via electrolysis, which will be combined with 150,000 tonnes of captured biogenic CO₂ from the CHP plant to produce 100,000 tonnes of e-Methanol annually. This will enable the avoidance of around 200,000 tonnes of CO₂e emissions per year.
