Liquid Wind and Umeå Energi Finalise Agreements to Develop e-Fuel Facility in Northern Sweden

Liquid Wind and Umeå Energi have finalised all agreements to advance the commercialisation of a large-scale e-fuel production facility in Umeå, Sweden. The milestone follows the environmental permit granted by the Land and Environmental Court in Umeå, enabling the project to move into the execution phase.

The facility, named FlagshipTHREE, will be co-located with Umeå Energi’s cogeneration plant Dåvaverket within the Umeå Eco Industrial Park. Designed to produce up to 100,000 tonnes of e-methanol annually, it will capture around 150,000 tonnes of biogenic CO₂ each year through carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) technology. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, with operations expected to start in 2028.

FlagshipTHREE will be one of the largest industrial investments in northern Sweden and a key component of the Umeå Eco Industrial Park – a hub for circular economy, electrification, and climate-neutral industrial development. The facility will use waste heat and residual resources from nearby operations, supporting industrial symbiosis and reducing overall emissions.

By boosting domestic eFuel production, the project strengthens Sweden’s and Europe’s energy security and independence while reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels. Once operational, it is expected to cut approximately 180,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, supporting the EU’s climate neutrality objectives.
