Itochu Corporation and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) have signed a joint development agreement to build a 300,000-tonne-per-year green hydrogen-based ammonia plant in Kandla, Gujarat. The facility will target supply to Singapore’s maritime sector, with operations expected to begin in 2028 following a demonstration phase in 2027.
L&T, which secured land in Kandla last year for clean fuel projects, will construct the production facilities, while Itochu will offtake the ammonia for bunkering operations. The companies are also assessing potential supply routes to Spain, Egypt, and Japan.
The project supports the International Maritime Organization’s decarbonisation goals, with green ammonia emerging as a leading candidate for clean shipping fuels. Existing global ammonia trade and port infrastructure are expected to aid rapid deployment.
