German cleantech firm INERATEC has officially opened ERA ONE, Europe’s largest commercial-scale power-to-liquid plant, located in Frankfurt. The facility produces up to 2,500 tonnes of carbon-neutral e-fuels annually, including sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF), e-diesel, and sustainable plastics precursors.
ERA ONE uses CO₂ sourced from a nearby biogas plant and green hydrogen, a by-product of chlorine production at the Frankfurt-Höchst industrial park. The plant converts these feedstocks into synthetic crude oil before refining it into various e-fuels.
The project is backed by a €70 million ($80 million) financing package, including €40 million in venture debt from the European Investment Bank and a €30 million grant from Breakthrough Energy Catalyst. Additional funding comes from Germany’s Federal Ministry for the Environment’s Environmental Innovation Programme and several strategic investors such as Piva Capital, Samsung Ventures, Safran Corporate Ventures, and Honda.
INERATEC’s modular plant design allows for rapid capacity expansion, with plans to scale production multiple times
