Hy2gen Nordic AS, the Norwegian subsidiary of global renewable hydrogen producer Hy2gen, has secured zoning approval for the Iverson renewable ammonia plant at the Birkeland industrial site in Sauda. The decision from the municipal council marks a key milestone in establishing large-scale renewable energy solutions in Norway.
The facility will feature a 270 MW electrolysis unit powered by hydropower, producing renewable ammonia to help cut almost 3 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions during its first decade of operation. Beyond its climate benefits, the project is expected to bring significant local value, including more than 300 jobs during construction, 50–60 permanent roles once operational, and further indirect employment in the community.
Aligned with Rogaland County Council’s zero-emission industry strategy and Norway’s national climate goals, the Iverson project will also contribute to international decarbonisation efforts. With zoning secured, the project will advance technical development work ahead of a final investment decision.
