The e-Fuels Laboratory in Punta Arenas, Chile, a joint initiative by HIF Global, the University of Magallanes (UMAG), and Empresas Gasco, has conducted over 50,000 fuel analyses since its launch three years ago – underscoring its growing role in synthetic fuel quality assurance, scientific research, and regional talent development.
Focused on advancing e-Gasoline and synthetic liquefied gas (e-LG), the lab carried out an average of 96 tests per day in 2024, with over half related to e-Gasoline. Tests include distillation, vapour pressure, detailed hydrocarbon analysis (DHA), and octane rating (RON), using state-of-the-art equipment.
HIF Magallanes General Manager Juan Eduardo Gallardo called the lab a symbol of “scientific innovation, industry, and territory,” helping position Magallanes as a future hub of global decarbonisation.
Beyond testing, the lab also serves as a training ground for local professionals and students, offering internships and supporting university theses on topics like wastewater treatment and quality systems. More than 100 visitors – including officials, academics, and investors—have toured the site in the past year.
The lab is expected to play a central role in the Faro del Sur project, a proposed scale-up that would further consolidate Magallanes as a key e-Fuels hub for Latin America and beyond.
