Greenlyte has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Eurowings to advance the production of power-to-liquid sustainable aviation fuel (PtL-SAF) at Düsseldorf Airport. The partnership will see Greenlyte build a real-world laboratory that captures CO₂ directly from the air, combines it with green hydrogen, and converts it into synthetic kerosene.
The facility is expected to produce around 150 tonnes of SAF per year once operational in 2028. Under the MoU, Eurowings plans to purchase the full output exclusively for an initial three-year period, making the airline both the project’s first customer and strategic partner.
By integrating local renewable power, including on-site solar, the project will demonstrate how electricity-based fuels can move from laboratory scale to commercial reality. While current production costs remain significantly higher than fossil kerosene, this initiative is designed to prove the viability of direct air capture-to-SAF at scale and pave the way for larger plants in the future.
