Elcogen Opens High-Volume SOFC and SOEC Factory in Estonia to Scale Global Clean Energy Solutions

news item image
Elcogen has launched ELCO I, a 14,000 m² manufacturing facility on the outskirts of Tallinn, boosting production capacity from 10 MW to 360 MW and making it one of Europe’s largest producers of high-efficiency Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) and Electrolysis (SOEC) technology. Components including cells, stacks, and modules will serve distributed energy, off-grid and stationary power, industrial backup, green hydrogen production, and Power-to-X applications.

The facility combines advanced automation, R&D capabilities, and sustainable design features, powered by 9 MW from the nearby Iru Power Plant. Process heat reuse and thermal oxidisers further reduce emissions. Total investment stands at approximately EUR 50 million, supported by stakeholders including Baker Hughes, HD Hyundai, and the European Innovation Fund.

Designed for global scalability, ELCO I will allow Elcogen to license technology and manufacturing methods to trusted partners while maintaining IP control. The launch event brought together over 300 guests, including investors, technology partners, and researchers, highlighting Elcogen’s growing role in the hydrogen economy.

Founded in 2001, Elcogen now employs nearly 150 staff from more than 20 nationalities. The facility is expected to create around 300 local jobs while delivering high-performance, cost-effective clean energy solutions to international markets.
