eChemicles, a Hungarian company focusing on CO₂ electrolyser technologies, has announced a collaboration with MATECH, a member of KÉSZ Group’s Industrial Technologies division, to construct a novel containerised CO₂ electrolyser unit to accelerate the commercialisation of the carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) technology.
The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (i.e., its conversion to more reduced chemical species using electrical energy) is a promising waste-to-wealth approach, generating high-value, green chemicals for industries including chemicals, steel, petrochemicals, plastics and synthetic fuels. When coupled with carbon-free electricity sources, the process provides an environmentally sustainable solution, potentially decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors.
Csaba Janáky, Co-Founder and CEO of eChemicles, says: 'We are pleased to start this collaboration with KÉSZ Group, which has decades of experience in providing EPC services for various industrial sectors. Working on the assembly of this containerised unit marks the first step in a longer journey and helps accelerate our market entry.'
Based in Szeged, Hungary, eChemicles was founded in 2022 following eight years of research at the University of Szeged. Leveraging proprietary membrane electrode assembly, stack, and system technologies, it developed the world’s first containerised low-temperature CO₂ electrolyser. The company is now preparing a second, substantially improved unit for on-site testing with customers.
