DNV Launches First EU/UK e-Methanol Tender Portal

news item image
DNV has launched the EU and UK’s first public e-methanol procurement portal, acting on behalf of a leading European producer to connect industrial and maritime offtakers with secure, long-term supply of this low-carbon fuel.

Produced from renewable hydrogen and captured biogenic carbon, e-methanol provides a technically mature, scalable solution for decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors including shipping, heavy industry, and aviation. The fuel also supports compliance with RED III, Fit for 55, EU ETS, ReFuelEU Aviation, and FuelEU Maritime regulations.

Several EU member states, including Germany, Spain, France, and Belgium, are introducing blending mandates above EU minimum levels, putting upward pressure on biofuel supply and prices. By structuring a transparent, competitive tender, DNV helps offtakers secure RFNBO-certified volumes, ensuring reliable, price-stable, and regulation-compliant supply while reducing exposure to compliance risks.

The tender comprises two stages: a non-binding qualification phase to shortlist participants, followed by direct negotiations between the producer and selected offtakers. Deliveries are expected to begin in H2 2028, with full RFNBO certification in place from project start.

This initiative demonstrates DNV’s role in de-risking renewable fuel procurement, supporting the growth of e-methanol as a bankable commodity, and accelerating the European energy transition.
