CO2next Launches Call for Interest For CO2 Terminal

news item image

CO2next is pleased to announce a Call for Interest for the expansion of its liquid CO₂ terminal with an additional rail unloading facility. This follows the successful completion of a joint feasibility study in 2025.

With the pre-FEED phase starting later this year, we invite all market parties to express their interest. As an open-access facility, CO2next provides non-discriminatory infrastructure solutions to support the growth of CC(U)S in Europe.

CO2next, a project by Vopak, Gasunie, Shell and TotalEnergies, is developing a liquid CO₂ terminal at the Maasvlakte in Rotterdam, providing direct access to offshore CO₂ storage, for example via Aramis pipeline infrastructure. It will offer handling, storage and transshipment of captured CO₂ delivered by ship.

Expanding the opportunities for CC(U)S in Europe

Through this Call for Interest, we aim to assess market demand for a facility to unload liquid CO₂ delivered by rail, as an addition to the currently planned CO2next terminal in Rotterdam. This creates new opportunities for CC(U)S, especially for industries that are not located near waterways or a CO₂ pipeline. This new capability contributes to building a fully integrated CO₂ transport network that enables large-scale CCS in Europe.
