Chilean Navy and HIF Global Test E-Fuels for Maritime Decarbonisation

news item image
At the Naval Energy Summit in Valparaíso, the Chilean Navy and HIF Global presented the results of a landmark test: for the first time, a Navy vessel was successfully powered by e-fuels produced at HIF’s Haru Oni plant in Punta Arenas.

Nearly 100 litres of e-fuel were blended with conventional 93-octane petrol and used to power a SHOA motorboat in the Strait of Magellan. The trial confirmed full engine compatibility and equal performance to traditional fuel, showing the potential of e-fuels as a drop-in solution for maritime use.

HIF described the test as a milestone in addressing one of the hardest sectors to decarbonise, while the Navy underlined its importance for future operational sustainability. Both organisations signalled the start of a working alliance to explore wider applications of e-fuels in naval operations.

Produced using renewable energy and captured CO₂, e-fuels provide a carbon-neutral pathway for shipping and other transport sectors that rely on liquid fuels, helping to advance global maritime decarbonisation.
