CATAGEN Launches ClimaHtech Green Flight to Scale Decentralised Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production

news item image
Belfast-based clean energy company CATAGEN has launched ClimaHtech Green Flight (CGF), a wholly owned subsidiary, at its Titanic Quarter campus. CGF will produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) using patented modular reactor technology and off-grid renewable or low-carbon electricity, enabling flexible and continuous fuel production. Unlike centralised SAF projects, CGF’s decentralised model allows rapid deployment close to airports or renewable energy sources.

The launch includes strategic offtake partnerships with Ryanair and Shell Aviation Ireland Limited. Each CGF system will produce 1 million litres of SAF per year with over 90% emissions reduction from well-to-wing compared to fossil jet fuel. Production uses CATAGEN’s BIOHGEN and E-FUEL GEN reactors through two pathways: BioSAF (Power-and-Biomass-to-Liquid) and eSAF (Power-to-Liquid).

Pre-production units are operational, supported by the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, and the company has submitted a SAF sample to the EU SAF Clearing House, progressing through fast-track ASTM D7566 Annex A1 certification. CGF plans to scale networks up to 10 million litres, accelerating SAF deployment, reducing import reliance, and supporting global net-zero aviation targets.

The project was aided by the UK Government’s £1 billion Net Zero Innovation Portfolio, funding low-carbon technologies and lowering decarbonisation costs.
