Dutch innovators Battolyser Systems and VDL Hydrogen Systems have announced a merger to commercialise a fully flexible, pressurised alkaline electrolyser tailored for large-scale industrial use. The merged entity will combine Battolyser’s energy flexibility with VDL’s high-capacity hydrogen systems, aiming to produce low-cost green hydrogen for sectors such as e-fuels, steel, and energy storage.
Unlike traditional electrolysers, the new system can dynamically adjust to variable renewable energy supply, converting surplus wind or solar into hydrogen and pausing operations when power is scarce – while still maintaining hydrogen output.
The deal, expected to complete in Q4 2025, is backed by major shareholders and will see VDL Groep act as manufacturing partner. Pilot projects are underway, with full-scale commercial deployment planned.
Both firms see this as a key step in building a competitive European hydrogen value chain and exporting next-generation electrolyser technology globally.
