Australian Startup Launches Hybrid Electrolyser to Tackle Green Hydrogen Costs

Cavendish Renewable Technologies (CRT), a cleantech firm based in Melbourne, has unveiled a new hybrid electrolysis platform that aims to dramatically cut the cost and complexity of green hydrogen production. The company’s C-Cell system blends solid oxide and alkaline technologies, using a proprietary ultra-thin ceramic membrane to improve efficiency and scalability.

Unlike conventional systems, the C-Cell operates at 100–150°C without requiring external heat, using internally generated thermal energy to achieve high efficiency – up to 41.5 kWh/kg of hydrogen. The platform also reduces balance-of-plant requirements and is designed for simplified installation, making it well-suited for integration with solar or wind.

CEO Dr Aniruddha Kulkarni said the C-Cell offers the performance of high-temperature solid oxide systems without the material and integration challenges of 800°C operation. “This is not speculative science,” he added. “It’s a practical and scalable approach to green hydrogen.”

CRT notes the system can also be adapted for other energy applications, including redox flow batteries and PEM-style fuel cells, offering a flexible foundation for broader clean energy deployment.
