ABB and SwitcH2 Partner on Floating Green Ammonia Production Vessel

news item image
ABB has signed a term sheet agreement with SwitcH2 to provide automation and electrification technologies for a floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit dedicated to the large-scale production of green ammonia off the coast of Portugal. The project will support the growing demand for low-carbon marine fuels and demonstrate how offshore facilities can contribute to global decarbonisation.

The FPSO will be powered by certified renewable electricity supplied through Power Purchase Agreements and will feature a 300 MW electrolyser capable of producing up to 243,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually. ABB will deliver a prefabricated e-House, electrical distribution systems, and its integrated control and safety system to ensure safe, efficient and reliable offshore operations.

Using seawater electrolysis, the facility will produce hydrogen which will then be combined with nitrogen extracted from the air to form green ammonia. The ammonia will be condensed and stored onboard before being transferred to carrier vessels for use as marine fuel or reconverted into hydrogen for industrial applications.

Front-end engineering and design (FEED) work is expected to continue until mid-2026, with a final investment decision targeted for later that year.
